Nature lovers will find Nerano the perfect starting point to explore one of the wildest and most spectacular stretches of coastline in Italy. Leave the car behind, put on your hiking shoes and set off: ancient trails that once connected the villages of the Sorrento Peninsula with the Amalfi Coast cross landscapes suspended above the sea, olive groves, Mediterranean scrub and breathtaking viewpoints.
The most famous is the trail to the Bay of Ieranto, a FAI reserve and part of the Punta Campanella Marine Protected Area, which ends at one of the most unspoilt bays in the Mediterranean, with views of Punta Campanella and the Faraglioni of Capri.
The Fiordo di Crapolla, starting from Sant’Agata sui Due Golfi or Torca and descending to the sea through 667 steps, offers a more intimate and mysterious atmosphere. Along the route, the Li Galli islets appear in the distance, together with the 16th-century tower built to defend against Saracen raids, an abandoned hamlet and the remains of a Roman villa, all overlooking the waters of the Gulf of Salerno.
Shorter but no less evocative is the walk to Recommone, reachable in about twenty minutes from Marina del Cantone. The trail opens onto exceptional views of the Li Galli islets, once the residence of the great dancer Rudolf Nureyev, and of the island of Isca, which belonged to Eduardo De Filippo, before leading to a pebble beach set at the mouth of a valley, watched over by the tower dating back to 1567.
Three different itineraries in terms of difficulty and character, yet united by one common thread: the absolute beauty of a stretch of coast that still knows how to surprise.
